FLOOD DEFENCE STRATEGY BOOSTED BY SPEARHEAD TECHNOLOGY

Frontline flood defences in Lincolnshire have been strengthened by the acquisition of state-of-the-art verge maintenance machines from Spearhead.

The Witham Fourth District Internal Drainage Board - which covers 40,000 hectares of land, more than 440 miles of water courses, and operates seven key pumping stations - has signed a deal for Spearhead’s top-of-the-range Orbital reach mowers to keep drains and dykes of vegetation.

The machines will tackle the weeds and grass that grow alongside drain banks; dealing with overgrown vegetation that can clog waterways, slow their flow, and raise the risk of flooding.

Spearhead’s Orbital 836 machines were chosen because of their proven track record for reliability and durability, and their advanced feature set that helps drivers tackle challenging terrain faster and more effectively. Key features include:

• A state-of-the-art autopilot system that automatically adjusts the height and angle of the cutting head to achieve the perfect finish – enabling an operator to work at twice the normal speed while improving safety by allowing the user to concentrate on the road ahead.

• The ability to quickly and safely switch the position of the reach mower to either side of the unit. This saves time on jobs by eliminating the need to reverse back at the end of every long run.

• An 80hp piston-power drive system, backed by reliable oil cooling that ensures continuous high output. Automatic pressure control prevents power peaks and enhances the lifespan of the machine.

• Parallel arm geometry for fast and smooth arm extension, eliminating the need for constant adjustment and repositioning.

• A high-quality build specification that ensures Orbital machines comply with the exacting health and safety and performance standards laid down by the Environment Agency.

The board’s engineering manager Andy Carrott said the Orbital machines were already proving popular with his team of drivers and would play an important role in the flood defence strategy.

He said: “Excess vegetation affects the flow of the watercourses and so we need the very best grassland maintenance equipment to keep the drains trim.

“The drivers really like the Orbital and I’m confident we have the right tool for the job. Our role in flood defence is crucial and Spearhead is helping us to tackle this very important challenge.”

Driver John Swain has been putting his machine through its paces and believes it is the ‘perfect choice’.

“It’s smooth, easy-to-use and very responsive. The reach is outstanding, it’s superior to rival models I have used, and it works perfectly. It’s a very driver-friendly machine and I’m delighted we chose it.”
