The Bishop of Ely. |
Spearhead Machinery Ltd
were recently awarded the “Runner up in the Husbandry and Maintenance
Category” for the new 820 Rotary Topper by the Royal Agricultural
Society of England. The award was presented by the Bishop of Ely at
this year’s Royal Show. |
| The judges were
particularly impressed that Spearhead had launched a machine that
would allow farmers and contractors the capability of quickly cutting
large areas in a day. Furthermore, the machine is more relevant to the
market due to the change in farming policy brought about by the
introduction of the Single Farm Payment Scheme. |
| The 820 Rotary mower
has a cutting width of 8.2 metres (27ft) and incorporates five rotors
and fifteen blades that allow the machine to cut 87ha (220acres) in a
10 hour day. |

Honours
for Spearhead
in
New Product Award Scheme at Royal Show |
| The new
Spearhead Orbital reach mower took the honours in the New Product Award
Scheme at the recent Royal Show with its innovative hydraulic undercarriage
weight transfer system. The machine was demonstrated in public for the
first time at the ADA Demonstration at Boston. A fully ballasted tractor
and 8m reach mower combination can exceed the tractor manufacturers Gross
Vehicle Weight (GVW) specification leaving the operators liable under the
PUWER 1998 regulations. The new Orbital undercarriage system reduces the
GVW by 2.5 tons making it legal to use normal 100 hp tractors appropriate
for mowing a 1.2m swath. |
 |
| The new undercarriage also
significantly improves sideways stability of the machine in work by
supporting the mower unit on its load carrying tyres rather than on the
tractors radial traction tyres. The additional set of wheels also reduce
the ground pressure on vulnerable embankments. |
| Increased safety during
high-speed transport is an additional benefit. With the mower weight
supported on the undercarriage instead of the rear of the tractor, steering
becomes more precise and the tractor becomes more stable. The
undercarriage can be raised hydraulically to reduce tyre scrub facilitate
manoeuvring in restricted spaces. |
| The new Orbital will mow
either side of the tractor and is available with maximum reach of 6m,
6.8m, 7.2m and 8.3m Low pressure over high pressure hydraulic proportional
controls are standard as is on 80 hp piston power hydraulic drive systems. |
| The New Orbital is available
now with prices from £25,957.00 |

Tridents
number 11 for the City of Hamburg |
| The City of Hamburg purchased their first Spearhead Trident 2 years ago and have continued to build up their fleet ever since. The fleet already numbers eight. Further purchases are planned as existing cylinder mowers reach the end of their economic life. The Tridents are mounted on 98 bhp John Deere 6310 tractors with front linkages and p.t.o.s. |
| The biggest benefits attributed to the Trident are the reduction in running costs and the flexibility to cut when the grass is wet or dry, regardless of length. Barbecues are a regular feature in the Hamburg parks in the summer months and the residue of these can cause high repair costs with conventional mowers. |
 |
| With no down time for sharpening with the Tridents, the output of the whole tractor/mower/driver unit is making significant savings across this busy and beautiful city. Hamburg City prefer to front mount the Trident centre mower due to the extra manoeuvrability required to mow round trees and other obstructions and also the ability to mow long grass before it is rolled down by the tractor wheels. |

Spearhead
460 mower increases combine output by 50% |
|
A Spearhead rotary cutter has the pivotal role in driving down costs and improving crop establishment on an East of Scotland arable unit. |
| The trailed Spearhead 460 was bought for the 2001 harvest to mow 35-40cm high stubbles on the 600ha of crops combined by Jimmy Clark at Luggate Farm,
Haddington, East Lothian. By the end of its first year on the farm it had also been used to mow the 40ha of Phacelia grown on set-aside land, topped 400ha of pasture, and was hired-out to another farm to top 300ha of set-aside
Phacelia. |
 |
| Jimmy regards the mower as essential for producing even, high-yielding crops in the growing system he uses on his heavy land. It has also increased output from his combine by 50 per cent by allowing him to reduce the amount of straw going through the harvester. As a result, he has increased the amount of land he crops by 50 per cent without the expense of buying a larger combine. More even subsequent crop establishment results from the improved spread of cut material than was experienced with a combine mounted spreader. |

Investors
in People |
| It is with great pride that Spearhead Machinery Ltd has been formally recognised as "Investors in People". The "Investors in People UK" standard provides a national framework for improving business performance and competitiveness through a planned approach to setting and communicating business objectives and developing people to meet these objectives. |
 |
| It is the only quality standard that focuses on people. The Investors in People Standard is focussed on four key principles. They are the companies commitment to developing its people, the planning behind the programme, the action involved in driving the development programme forward and also the evaluation and monitoring of the progress as it is made. Spearhead is thought to be the only company in their industry sector to have achieved this standard. |
| Spearhead is a dynamic company with an impressive rate of growth at a time when the industry has been contracting. A significant feature of the organisation is the ease with which new employees become quickly absorbed into the organisation and are soon producing their best. The infrastructure is in place to support and develop staff from an early stage of their career to the long-term benefit of everyone involved. A telling comment by the assessor was how every employee believed they had the ability to discuss details of their job with the directors on a first name basis. The formal report contained a quote from a fresh starter "the directors commitment to training is a breath of fresh air compared to my last job". Another new employee stated "for the first time in my working life, I feel what I do actually matters and is appreciated". |
| The award itself is regarded as only the icing on the cake. The real value is regarded as the benefits
enjoyed every day of having a committed and skilled staff. |

New
telescopic arm verge mower goes to new lengths! |
|
The telescopic arm feature of the new
Excel 645T extends the capability of this versatile reach mower without
compromising its ability to work in confined areas. Smooth movement
between 5.6 m and 6.4m reach is available at the touch of a button to
provide increased flexibility where the job requires both a long reach
and the ability to work in narrow spaces. Construction equipment
technology is applied to maximise the service life and minimise the
running costs of the new telescopic facility. Detailed attention to the
minimising the extra weight of the extending arm enables easy fitting on
the three-point linkage mounting of suitable tractors. |
 |
|
Operator convenience has the highest
priority with the new Highway 645T with monolever proportional controls
and the Autopilot system as standard. Mechanical parallel arm linkage
makes positioning the cutting head a simple one-movement task. |
|
Extra output comes from the extra wide
1.3m cutting head, fitted with a big 150mrn diameter cutting height
controlling roller. "C" flails are fitted as standard to give
a clean cut and a thorough mulching of the cut material. |
